This lecture will examine the life and legacy of Janusz Korczak, a groundbreaking Polish pediatrician, author, orphanage director, and public intellectual in mid-century Poland. This champion of children’s rights continues to inspire educators and childcare experts today. He is celebrated by Polish and Jewish communities alike for his life’s work and the sacrifices he made for the children in his care.
About the speaker
Michael N. Dobkowski is professor of religious studies and chair of Holocaust studies at Hobart and William Smith Colleges. He currently occupies the John Milton Potter Chair in the Humanities. His main areas of interest include the American Jewish experience, Holocaust studies, antisemitism, and contemporary Jewish thought. He is the author or editor of over ten books, including The Politics of Indifference: Documentary History of Holocaust Victims in America, Jewish American Voluntary Organizations, The Coming Age of Scarcity, and Genocide in the Modern Age. Since 2002, he has led eight study trips to Germany and Poland for HWS students and alumni.

The Nanovic Institute for European Studies is organizing this lunch lecture event. All are welcome. Lunch will be provided, beginning 30 minutes before the lecture, while supplies last.
This presentation is part of a series of events planned by the Nanovic Institute for European Studies and the Jewish Federation of St. Joseph Valley to commemorate International Holocaust Remembrance Day, which is observed each year on January 27. An event at the Jewish Federation is also planned for the Sunday before this event at 4:00 p.m.
