Hear from Max Kade Visiting Professor Simone Neuber next week as she presents her lecture “On Kant’s ‘Inner Liars’ and Other Victims of Self-Deception.”

Recent Kant scholarship often emphasizes Kant's sensitivity to the problem of self-deception, which has been the subject of lively philosophical debate since the 1960s (even if Kant, as one sometimes reads, refers to the issue as an “inner lie”). However, when Kant is hereby linked to the contemporary debate, a problem emerges: That which disturbs Kant when he speaks of an “inner lie” is not illuminated by focusing on the fashionable topic of “self-deception” - indeed, one even runs the risk of missing, through implicit preconceptions, what Kant has in mind when he problematizes a „Selbsttäuschung“. This presentation is aimed at anyone interested in Kant, self-deception or hermeneutical pitfalls.
