Born in 1977, Gabowitsch is a sociologist and historian who studies protest and social movements in Russia as well as Soviet war memorials. He is a research fellow at the Einstein Forum in Potsdam, Germany. His recent book Protest in Putin’s Russia draws on interviews, observation, and a detailed database that combines media reports with participants’ accounts and photos. He has also written about structural similarities between liberal, nationalist, and commemorative movements.
