Jeffrey Engelmeier Senior German Award

The Department of German and Russian grants this award annually to an outstanding student of German whose involvement in the life of the department, its students, or community is especially conspicuous. This award honors the memory of Jeffrey Engelmeier, a Notre Dame student who was tragically killed in a boating accident and graduated posthumously in 1992. As a student of German, Jeffrey distinguished himself not only through outstanding grades, and by an extraordinary ability to assimilate the German language, but also by his exemplary attitude. For example, he generously made himself available for tutoring other students. When asked why he did this, he said it was simply because he loved the language and wanted to share his passion with others.
