Directed by Armando Iannucci
With Steve Buscemi, Jason Isaacs, Paddy Considine
Rated R, 107 minutes, DCP

When tyrannical dictator Joseph Stalin dies in 1953, his parasitic cronies square off in a frantic power struggle to become the next Soviet leader. Like director Armando Iannucci’s previous work (Veep, In the Loop), the bumbling attempts to gain power are much less like the calculating House of Cards and much more like Keystone Cops falling over one another en route to the throne. Among the contenders (all of whom have American or English accents thus situating the story in the West) are the dweebish Georgy Malenkov (Jeffrey Tambor), the wily Nikita Khrushchev (Steve Buscemi), and secret police chief Lavrenti Beria (Simon Russell Beale). As they brawl and backstab their way to the top, the question remains: just who is running the government?
